ICONfront ID24 member introduction Vol. 6: Yuki Kobayashi

In the last article, we introduced Moena Kobayashi, an ICU student who studies Sociology and Environmental Studies.
It has been more than half a year since the last time, and we have welcomed new members. This time, we interviewed an ID24 student Yuki Kobayashi at International Christian University.
She shares her feelings for ICONfront’s activities and the learning inside and outside of ICU!

Describe yourself freely. 

Hello, I’m Yuki Kobayashi! I’m a sophomore student of ICU and I’m planning to major in sociology.

I joined ICONFront as a member this April.

I was born and brought up in Tokyo. I’ve never lived in a foreign country, but I have studied English since I was small. I’m also studying Korean as a hobby.

At ICU, I am interested in studying gender studies, which I was fascinated by my high school ethics class, and family sociology.

I love to take pictures, design and eat delicious food ❤️(especially sweets)

Q2.ICONfrontに興味を持ったきっかけは何ですか？

ICONfrontはインスタグラムを通じて知りました。もともと、ICUの魅力を伝えるような団体に所属したいという思いがあったので、この団体の活動をとても魅力的に感じました。また、メンバー内に知り合いがいたことも、このICONFront入会を後押ししてくれました。

同じ大学の仲間に、自分の知らない素敵なアクティビストがたくさんいることをICONFrontを通して知ることができ、また、私の周りにいる、まだ取り上げられていないアクティビストたちも紹介したいという思いがありました。ICU内でのコネクションを作ることができるのも一つの大きな魅力だと思います。

What interested you in being a part of ICONfront? 

I found out about ICONfront through Instagram. I had always wanted to belong to an organization that conveyed the appeal of ICU, so I was very attracted to this organization. The fact that I knew one of the members also encouraged me to join ICONfront.

I was able to find out through ICONfront that there were many wonderful activists at my university that I didn’t know about, and I want to introduce the activists around me who have not been featured yet. I think one of the main attractions is that we can build connections within ICU.

Q3. ICUでこれから何を学んでいきたいですか？

自己紹介のところでも話した通り、社会学の中でもジェンダー・セクシュアリティ、家族研究分野に興味があります。

高校生の時に倫理の授業で、グループでまるまる１授業を作り上げるプロジェクトをしたのですが、他のグループのLGBTQ+等ジェンダー関連の講義を受ける中で、自分の中で今まで持っていた偏見や固定観念に気づかされました。

大学でもジェンダー・セクシュアリティ研究をメジャーにしようかと考えていたのですが、久保田先生の家族社会学に魅了されて、社会学を専攻しようと決めました。現代家族がどのような形で、どのような特徴を持つのかについて、ジェンダーや社会的立場、虐待などの様々な角度から掘り下げていく学問です。久保田先生の授業自体も、ヘビーですがかなり身になる授業なので、気になる方は是非とってみてください！

What do you want to study at ICU?

As I mentioned in my self-introduction, I am interested in the fields of gender and sexuality and family studies within sociology. 

In an ethics class in high school, we did a project in which each presentation group was in charge of an entire class session. Through taking lectures about LGBTQ+ and gender studies taught by another group, I was made aware of the stereotypes and prejudice that I had. 

Therefore, in ICU, I planned to major in gender and sexuality studies, but I was intrigued by the class of family sociology taught by Prof. Kubota, and in the end, I decided to study sociology as my major. Family sociology is a study that delves into the shape and characteristics of the modern family from a variety of angles, including gender, social position, and abuse. His class is quite intensive in terms of the amount of assignments, but it’s very informative, so I recommend it!

Q5. いま一番力を入れていることはなんですか?

今一番力を入れているのは、英語の勉強です。大学生のうちに叶えたい目標が一つあり、そのためにELAが終わった今も、英語資格試験の勉強を続けています。独学だけではなく、ICUのLanguage Buddiesという、海外の大学に在学する生徒とペアになり、1対1でお互いの学びたい言語でセッションをするプログラムを使っています。

また、勉強以外では、バイトで都内のホテルの中にあるレストランに勤務しており、普段の生活では体験できないような環境で、体力勝負の仕事をしています。社内には多くの外国人社員もいるので、毎回仕事の合間に彼らといろんな話をするのが楽しみです。

What are you putting the most effort into right now?

Now, I’m putting the most effort into studying of English. I have a goal that I want to achieve while I am still a university student, so I’m continuing to study for English certification exams even after ELA is over. In addition to studying on my own, I am also using ICU’s Language Buddies program, where I am paired with a student from a foreign university and we have one-on-one sessions in the language we both want to learn.

Other than my studies, I work part-time at a restaurant in a hotel in Tokyo, which is a physically demanding job in an environment that I would never experience in my daily life. There are many foreign employees in the company, so I look forward to talking with them about various things in between work every time.

Q6. あなたの”icon”は？

私のiconは、ズバリ高校同期の友達です。友達と言っても、この人、という特定の一人を指しているわけではなく、高校時代に関わった人や今でも仲良くしてくれている人たちを見て、私の価値観が変化したと考えているからです。こう言うととてもありきたりに聞こえるのですが、様々なバックグラウンドを持つ友人は、当時の私にとって刺激的で、人との関わり方や物事の考え方を彼らから自然と学びました。

一番最近ハッとさせられたのは、私が大学の授業で出された任意のプレゼン課題をやるかやらないか迷っていた時の友人の一言です。その時はいろいろなレポートに追われていて、いくら加点があるからとはいえ、プレゼンにまで手を掛ける時間はないのではないか、と思っていました。そこで友達が、「時間は見つけるものじゃなくて、作るものだよ」、と一言。文字に起こすとなんだかクサく聞こえますが（笑）、結局それを聞いてプレゼンに参加しました。

友人から物事の柔軟な捉え方を吸収できていることをとてもありがたく思いますし、何年一緒にいても私の人生の仲間であり先輩のような存在です。

What/who is your “icon”?

My ICONs are my friends from high school. I’m not referring to one specific person, but rather to the people I was involved with and who are still my friends today, because they changed my values and beliefs. This may sound very cliché, but having friends with various backgrounds was inspiring to me at that time, and I naturally learned from them how to relate to people or accept different opinions. 

The thing that impressed me recently was a comment from a friend when I couldn’t decide whether or not to do an optional presentation assignment for a class. At that time, I was busy doing other assignments, so I thought I had no time to prepare the presentation, but she told me, “You don’t find time, you make it.” It sounds cheesy when I transcribe it, but in the end, I decided to join the presentation. 

I am very lucky to be able to learn how to think flexibly from my friends, and no matter how many years we have known each other, they are like my lifelong friends and seniors in life.
